Y gyfraith a’r gymdeithas

Cymdeithas hierarchaidd a welir yn y testunau cyfraith, gyda’r genedl neu’r gymuned yn ganolog er mwyn sicrhau bod y gyfraith yn cael ei gweithredu yn llwyddiannus. Roedd gan bob person yn y gymdeithas werth ar eu bywyd, (galanas), a gwerth am anaf, (sarhaed), a delid ar ben unrhyw iawndal am weithred fwriadol. Dim ond mewn achosion arbennig o ladrad y ceid y gosb eithaf, a’r dull arferol o ddelio gydag anafiadau neu golledion bwriadol neu ddamweiniol oedd trwy dalu iawndal i’r colledwr (neu i deulu’r colledwr mewn achosion o ladd).
